Patient Journey
Welcome to The Horder Centre
At The Horder Centre, it is our priority to make sure that your stay with us is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. To prepare you for your visit we thought you would like to see a typical patient’s journey through our Centre.
Reception
Your visit to the Centre starts at the Main Reception where you will be welcomed and advised where you should go for your appointment.
If you have come in for an operation you will be escorted to your ward, where you will be greeted by a member of the nursing team.
Outpatients
Just around the corner from Reception is our Outpatients Department where you will be checked in to meet one of our Consultant Specialists or a member of our multi-disciplinary team.
If you have come for a pre-operative health check, we will conduct a comprehensive pre-admission assessment with you to ensure that all the relevant details about you and your health are known prior to surgery.
Consultant Specialists
Our Consultant Specialists are here to help and advise you on what procedure is best for you.
If you should require surgery your Consultant Specialist will ensure you are fully aware of the procedures. The average length of your stay will be determined on the procedure but could be as a day case, overnight, short stay or longer for Joint Replacement.
Prior to surgery, your general condition will be assessed so that any special needs are highlighted and the staff informed. Your progress will be monitored throughout your stay; there is a Resident Medical Officer on duty 24 hours a day.
Wards
You will already be aware of the preparations required prior to your operation by your 'Guide to The Horder Centre'. One of our Team will ensure that you are welcomed to the Centre and taken to your Ward. The Horder Centre has two surgical wards and three operating theatres.
Theatres
Once you are prepared for surgery, we will take you from the ward to one of our state of the art theatres for your operation. The length of your operation will vary in length dependent upon the procedure.
Recovery & Recovery Ward
After your operation, you will be taken to our Recovery Unit, and then transferred back to your ward after your initial post operative recovery.
On the ward you will be closely monitored and the staff will encourage you to become mobile as soon as possible after your operation. Our focus is on rehabilitation and you will be advised on the best therapy programme for you and your particular circumstances.
Bedrooms
After initial recovery you will be moved to our Dufferin Suite which comprises single bedrooms, each with TV, telephone and nurse call facility. Your mobilisation and recovery will be continued here.
Following your episode of care, your discharge from hospital will be discussed and reviewed with you. We will ensure that all the preparations are in place to make this as stress free as possible.
Occupational Therapy
Our Occupational Team assist in advising on daily living activities such as dressing, cooking etc. With our specially equipped kitchen and bathroom you will be given the best possible help to ensure you are able to readjust to your home environment.
Physiotherapy
Our Physiotherapy Unit offers an extremely well-equipped gymnasium where joint replacement patients take part in daily classes. Our experienced and qualified physiotherapists will advise and help you on your mobility programme to get you moving as soon as possible. Treatment is available to both in and outpatients.
Dining Room
The Horder Centre’s dining room is where in-patients may have their lunch. Visitors may also use this facility by prior arrangement. All our food is freshly cooked on the premises and special dietary requirements are catered for.
Going Home
Before you are discharged, you will be assessed to ensure you are ready to leave. In general, you will be ready to leave after 4 to 5 days.
Before you leave, we will arrange a follow-up appointment in Outpatients, along with an appropriate supply of medication and advice on coping at home.
You should arrange for a friend or relative to accompany you home when you are discharged.
Your GP will also be notified when you are discharged and sent a discharge summary and arrangements for removal of stitches etc will be organised with the surgery.
Transport
We recommend that you arrange for your own transport to and from the hospital with a friend or relative. However, we do have limited resources to offer transport to those in need, so please talk with our customer services team to discuss your situation.
